International Day of Banks
Emphasizing the relevance of inclusion in the international financial system at
all levels and the importance of considering financial inclusion as a policy objective
in financial regulation, in accordance with national priorities and legislation,
Recognizing the significant potential of multilateral development banks and
other international development banks in financing sustainable development and
providing know-how,
Recognizing also, at the national level, the vital role of banking systems in
Member States in contributing to the improvement of the standard of living,
Reaffirming its resolutions 53/199 of 15 December 1998 and 61/185 of
20 December 2006 on the proclamation of international years, and Economic and
Social Council resolution 1980/67 of 25 July 1980 on international years and
anniversaries,
1.
Decides to designate 4 December as the International Day of Banks, to be
observed annually;
2.
Invites all Member States, the organizations of the United Nations system
and non-governmental organizations to observe the International Day of Banks, in a
manner consistent with national priorities, in order to highlight the role of banks in
contributing to achieving sustainable development;
3.
Invites the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the Secretariat,
the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Conference on
Trade and Development and other relevant United Nations entities to facilitate the
observance of the International Day of Banks in collaboration with other relevant
organizations, mindful of the provisions contained in the annex to Economic and
Social Council resolution 1980/67;
4.
Stresses that the cost of all activities that may arise from the
implementation of the present resolution should be met from voluntary contributions;
5.
Requests the Secretary-General to bring the present resolution to the
attention of all Member States, the organizations of the United Nations system and
other relevant stakeholders for appropriate observance.
