Summary
At its tenth session, the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent
engaged in a thematic discussion on the situation of people of African descent in the
context of the International Year for People of African Descent 2011, as proclaimed by the
General Assembly in its resolution 64/169. The members of the Working Group and invited
expert panellists made presentations on the topics of Durban +10; an overview of the
current situation faced by people of African descent; positive action to combat
discrimination against people of African descent; the contribution made by people of
African descent in global development; and the lack of knowledge of the culture, history
and traditions of people of African descent by themselves and others.
